Here is a belated review of The Old Salt restaurant, sister to Lamie’s Inn where we stayed over the weekend. It has been around since 1740 as well, but parts burnt down and were rebuilt over time. It remains a vibrant family-fun business in the heart of the town of Hampton, NH.

The walls are covered in articles and photos relevant to the establishment.

Their dining rooms felt warm and inviting.

I think the photos look better with the iPhoto effects, don’t you? J’s iPhone always takes blurry pics.

We came for dinner one time over the weekend. The menu offers very traditional homestyle meals. Steak, pasta, poultry, and lots of vegetable sides. To start, we shared a cup of New England clam chower (when in Rome…) It was delicious, served with oyster crackers and a basket of cheese bread! We brought home a can of chowder from the restaurant as a souvenir.

Along came the entrées, I ordered a half rack of ribs + mashed potatoes + carrots.

Yowzahs. This was as cumbersome as it looks!

On the other side of the table, Justin ordered steak tips + scallops + fries + carrots.

This was also an awe-striking portion. I traded a couple ribs for a scallop and some fries from J’s plate. The baked scallops were perfect, sweet and savory. All the food was tasty and served hot. We loved the atmosphere and enjoyed our service thoroughly, and thus tipped heavily.

On Doggie Bags for Hotel-Stayers:

Thankfully, we had a mini fridge + microwave in our hotel room, so we took half the meal back as leftovers. We usually bring home doggie bags from dining out near home, but it’s not easy to do on vacation. It is well worth investigating before you book to find a hotel room that offers a small kitchenette.  Just a microwave and mini-fridge will help you save money and waste less food while you travel!
